About the school
Othoor Panchayat falls under the jurisdiction of Varkala Taluk in Thiruvananthapuram district, and St. Sebastian's LP School operates under the management of the Trivandrum Archdiocese. The school began its operations in 1899, during the tenure of Bishop Benziger of Kollam, with the approval of Joseph Fernandes. Initially, classes from first to fifth grade were conducted at the school.Students from the fifth grade onwards continued their education at schools in Varkala. The first headmaster was Mr. Joseph B. Fernandes, and the first student to enroll was Mr. Vastin Fernandes, his son.
The school is situated in a 2 acres, 13 cent plot,
adjacent to the Holy Sebastian’s Church. It is surrounded by lush greenery, including coconut and mango trees, and is located near the Kappil Lake. This school, with its emphasis on noble qualities, has been an indispensable institution for the social development of the village, bearing witness to historical truths and events. Later, numerous schools were established in various locations, supplementing this primary public school. Once, this school served as a refuge for people of all castes and religions in the vicinity who came together to pursue knowledge in this temple of Saraswati. The school was established on June 1,1899, according to historical records.
A shift system
was implemented at the school. From 1990 to 1998,the school functioned as an uneconomic institution.Mr. Lucius Fernandes, one of Mr. Joseph Fernandes's sons, served as a teacher, Assistant Education Officer (AEO), and District Education Officer (DEO).
