St. Thomas HS, Poonthura
About the school
The required flowers were supplied to the temples under the control of the Travancore royal palace from Poonthura. As the place where flowers were produced, the area got the name Ananthapadmanabhan Poonthura. Later the name was changed to Poonthura. Majority of the people in this area work in the fishing sector. The people here were illiterate. The only refuge of these people was the Poontura St. Thomas Church and its priests. In 1913, informal educational activities were started with the construction of an oilshed to impart literacy to the children of fishermen.
In 1923, the school was recognized at the government level and raised as an aided school. Shri S. Parameswaran was Nair. The first headmaster. He managed to lift the region from the educational backwardness. After coming to the school in the morning, he went to the seashore, found the children and brought them to school.Initially it was from 1st to 5th standard. Then classes 6 and 7 started. The initiative for the growth of this school was taken in the 1950s by Rev. Fr. It was Sylvester Fernandez. Later, Poonthura St. Thomas School became the leading school among the 53 schools under the Diocese of Thiruvananthapuram.
