St Michael's HS, kadinamkulam
About the school
This school, named after Saint Michael the Archangel, is situated in an area called Pudukurithi in the village Panchayath of Kulam Kulam in Kazhakootam block of Thiruvananthapuram district. The school is located roughly midway between the Kurdumkulam Lake to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, the famous Kurdumkulam Mahadeva Temple to the south, and Our Lady Omersi Convent to the north. 95% of the population here are fishermen, rope workers and other wage workers. Therefore, they are very backward in the fields of finance, education and health. They had two schools for education. One belonged to the church and the other belonged to a person named Kesavan Nair.
In course of time both these were taken over by the government. But there was no way for further education. It was on this occasion that in 1919, Mr. Jerome Perera, a community philanthropist and a man of today, established a U.P. School started. In the early 1950s, the school was taken over by the Puducherry Church. In 1982, the school was upgraded to a high school. The then Parish Council, Innatuka Ran and the then first teacher Mr. Alfred Fernandes spearheaded this effort. He was also able to hold the title of Principal of this school for 30 years.
